Interocular ratio and visible eye spacing

The interocular ratio compares the gap between the inner eye corners with visible face width. It describes proportion in one photograph; it is not an eye-health measurement.

How the interocular ratio is measured

The numerator is the distance between the medial canthi—the inner corners of the eyes. The denominator is a selected visible face width. Dividing one by the other makes the result independent of image resolution.

The exact value still depends on which width landmarks a tool uses. It should be compared only with results generated by the same method.

Eye spacing is one part of facial harmony

People often describe eyes as close-set or wide-set, but those labels are relative to the surrounding face. Brow shape, nose width, eye size and styling all change the visual impression without moving the inner eye corners.

What affects the photo result

  • Head rotation changes visible width.
  • A close wide-angle lens distorts central-to-edge distances.
  • Squinting or shadows can obscure eye-corner landmarks.
  • A crop that excludes the face edge prevents a useful ratio.

Intercanthal, interpupillary and eye-width measurements

Eye-spacing discussions often merge three different distances. Inner-canthal distance runs between the medial eye corners. Interpupillary distance runs between pupil centers and is used in optical contexts. Eye-fissure width describes an individual eye opening. A cosmetic ratio must name the selected points so users do not mistake it for an optical or clinical measurement.

Omogle uses visible inner-corner landmarks relative to a visible face width. The ratio removes the unit and image scale, but it does not become an interpupillary-distance measurement. Pupil centers can also shift with gaze, while the inner corners are anatomical boundaries. Never use the value to order glasses, adjust a device or assess vision.

Why the same spacing can look different

Perception is relational. The same inner-corner distance can appear wider beside a narrow nose or closer beside a broad face. Eye-opening width, brow shape, bridge width, makeup, glasses and hairstyle change the frame around the measurement. Descriptive labels such as close-set and wide-set therefore depend on which surrounding features a viewer emphasizes.

This does not make measurement pointless; it defines its role. The ratio can describe one relationship consistently while the photograph shows the larger composition. It should not be converted into a universal beauty rule or treated as a defect detector. Faces can look balanced across a wide range of feature combinations.

Photographing eye spacing consistently

Face the camera directly with gaze near the lens and the camera at eye height. Yaw makes one side recede and changes the visible face-width denominator. Very close wide-angle photography enlarges the central region relative to the face edges. Soft, even light helps the detector locate both inner corners without a shadow or reflection masking one side.

Avoid photos in which glasses glare across the corners, lashes or makeup obscure the landmark, or a filter enlarges the eyes. If the detector cannot see the full face boundary, it cannot form a useful ratio. A rejected image is a request for better input, not a negative statement about the face.

Reading an eye-spacing ratio without an “ideal”

A target range in a cosmetic calculator is a design reference, not proof that values outside it are abnormal. Population averages vary with landmark choice, age, sample and facial width, and averages do not define what any individual face should be. The same numerical distance can participate in many balanced combinations.

Use the ratio to answer a narrow question: how large is the visible inner-eye gap relative to the selected face width in this image? Pair it with the photograph and the stated method. Do not use it to infer vision, craniofacial diagnosis or the outcome of a cosmetic procedure.

If a child or adult has a clinical concern about eye position or vision, a browser landmark ratio cannot replace examination. Cosmetic proportions and medical ocular measurements may use nearby points for entirely different purposes.
