How the face shape test measures your face
Four distances, three ratios and one closest-match rule.
A face-landmark model maps your face in the browser. The test then reads four distances from those landmarks: the width across the upper forehead, the width across the cheekbones, the width across the jaw corners, and the length of the face from top to chin. Dividing the first three by the cheekbone width turns them into ratios, so the result does not depend on how large the face is in the photograph.
The face length runs from the top of the landmark mesh to the bottom of the chin. It is not a hairline-to-chin measurement. A photograph cannot locate a hairline reliably: hair covers it, styling moves it, recession changes it, and a hat or a fringe hides it completely. Guessing that boundary and then reporting the guess as a measurement would add false precision, so this test measures what the landmarks actually support and says so on the result.

Each width is then compared with the typical proportion at its own landmark height, because the three points sit at different heights of the face outline and the widest part of that outline is the cheek line. A forehead therefore counts as wide when it is wide for a forehead, and a jaw counts as wide when it is wide for a jaw. Without that step every face would read as narrow at the top and at the bottom, and the labels that need a leading forehead or a leading jaw could never appear.
The closest-match rule then compares the numbers in a fixed order. It asks which of the three widths leads, how far the other two fall behind it, and whether the face is long or short for its width. The first rule that fits decides the label. Nothing about the calculation is random, so the same photograph always returns the same shape and the same three ratios.
The seven face shapes and what defines each one
Every label is a statement about width and length, nothing more.

Two pairs in that table differ only in length. Square and oblong describe the same width pattern, one on a short face and one on a long face. Round and oval do the same for a face whose cheeks are widest. That is why a small change in the photograph can move a result between them: the widths stay put while the visible length changes.
The names are a convention borrowed from hairdressing, eyewear fitting and styling guides. They are not anatomical categories, they have no clinical definition, and no standards body maintains the list. Different guides draw the boundaries in different places, and some publish five shapes rather than seven. Read the label as a description of an outline, not as a classification of a person.

What moves the result, and what the label does not mean
Four things move a face-shape result more than anything about the face itself. Hair across the temples hides the forehead width and can turn an even outline into a taper. Turning the head reduces the visible width on one side and shortens the measured span. Tipping the chin up or down changes the length while the widths stay the same. A close wide-angle lens enlarges the middle of the face and compresses the edges, which shifts every ratio at once.
